Chooseday 22nd August - Choose To Wear It Purple

Updated: Aug 22, 2023

Good Morning,

Happy Chooseday! In the lead up to Wear It Purple Day, we invite you to create space for education, celebration and support of LGBTQIA+ communities.

Did you know?

  1. Up to 21% of high school students within Western Countries identify as LGBTQIA+. (La Trobe University [2019], GLAAD Accelerating Acceptance [2017]). What we're unsure of, is how many LGBTQIA+ youth are forgotten or hidden in other countries due to safety concerns - which is why this day is so important.

  2. 66% will experience some form of harassment or bullying due to their identity. (La Trobe University [2021]).

  3. As a result, LGBTQIA+ young people are more likely to experience depression in the past 12 months than other youth. (La Trobe University [2020], Beyond Blue [2020]).

Join us in celebrating Wear It Purple Day—a day dedicated to showing support for LGBTQIA+ communities and promoting a world where every young person can thrive, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation.

Wear It Purple Day traces its roots back to 2010 when two young individuals in Australia chose to take a stand against bullying and discrimination faced by LGBTQIA+ youth. Their simple idea of wearing purple as a visible sign of support has grown into an international movement, inspiring conversations and fostering inclusivity. This year, Wear It Purple Day falls on Friday 25th August. Here are a few ways you can celebrate Wear It Purple Day and uplift LGBTQIA+ communities:

  1. Wear Purple with Pride: Choose to wear purple clothing, accessories, or even paint your nails purple to show your support. Your purple attire becomes a conversation starter and a way to raise awareness about the challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ youth.

  2. Educate and Advocate: Take the opportunity to educate yourself and others about LGBTQIA+ rights and issues. Engage in respectful conversations and be an ally by advocating for equality and acceptance.

  3. Spread Positivity: Use social media to spread positivity and celebrate diversity. Share empowering stories, artwork, and resources that uplift and validate the experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals. We suggest @wear_it_purple @minus18youth @pinnaclefoundation

  4. Support LGBTQIA+ Charities: Extend your support beyond Wear It Purple Day by contributing to charities like Wear It Purple, The Pinnacle Foundation and Minus18, who provide crucial resources, workshops, and safe spaces for LGBTQIA+ youth.

Minus18 is Australia’s charity improving the lives of LGBTQIA+ youth via life-affirming events, leadership programs, and education for the whole community.

Creating an Australia free from discrimination is a job for everyone. For schools and workplaces all across Australia, Minus18 provides LGBTQIA+ inclusion training and free digital resources to inspire a world where LGBTQIA+ young people are safe and belong.

Your donation keeps youth programs and digital resources completely from Minus18 free, ensuring support reaches those who need it most.

98% of LGBTQIA+ Youth said Minus18 had a positive impact on their mental wellbeing. (1,920 total participants, Minus18 Post-Event Impact Surveys. [2023-2022]).

As we choose to wear purple, let's choose to stand with LGBTQIA+ youth, celebrate their identities, and create a world where acceptance, love, and respect know no bounds.
