National Reconciliation Week (NRW) – this Saturday 27th May to Saturday 3rd June – is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared cultures, histories and celebrations, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
NRW is bookended by two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision, respectively. Reconciliation Australia’s theme for this year is, “Be a voice for generations” calling on all Australians to act now to tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation. So what does reconciliation mean to us? Here at GoodCompany, we believe reconciliation starts with accountability. We are deeply embarrassed and livid at the fact that Australia is the only Commonwealth country in the world to have never signed a treaty with its Indigenous people. For over 65,000 years, Aboriginal people looked after and thrived on the land we work and live on today. We have so much to reflect on and learn.
Reconciliation is a long, winding journey for all Australians – as individuals, families, communities, organizations and most importantly as a nation. We encourage everyone to come together and choose how to celebrate National Reconciliation Week. Whether that's joining in the conversation, taking action and attending events, spending mindful time on Country, supporting First Nations organizations or simply spreading the word of reconciliation. What will you choose to do?
