Chooseday 4th July - Choose to celebrate NAIDOC week!

Good Morning,

Happy Chooseday! Today, we invite you to choose to celebrate NAIDOC Week—a time to honor the rich cultures, histories, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia. This annual celebration provides an opportunity for all Australians to come together, learn, and show support for Indigenous communities.

NAIDOC, which stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee, has a significant history. It began in the 1920s when Indigenous rights activists and community leaders organized events to raise awareness of the issues faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Over the years, NAIDOC Week has evolved into a week-long celebration, highlighting the diverse cultures and contributions of First Nations peoples.

The theme for NAIDOC Week 2023 is "For Our Elders." This theme serves as a powerful call to action, encouraging all Australians to engage in meaningful dialogue about Indigenous Elders, to be open and respectful to the thousands of years of knowledge Elders hold, embrace truth-telling, and work towards reconciliation.

It is an opportunity to reflect on the history, culture, and ongoing contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and to take steps towards building a more inclusive and just society.

Here are three ways you can support NAIDOC Week:

  1. Educate Yourself: Take the time to learn about the rich history, traditions, and stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Engage with Indigenous art, literature, and cultural events. By deepening your understanding, you can foster greater respect, appreciation, and cultural awareness.

  2. Participate in Local Events: Attend local NAIDOC Week events in your community. These events often include cultural performances, exhibitions, workshops, and storytelling sessions. By actively participating, you can show support, celebrate Indigenous culture, and contribute to the vibrant spirit of NAIDOC Week.

  3. Support Indigenous Businesses and Causes: Choose to support Indigenous businesses and causes. Seek out Indigenous-owned businesses for your purchasing needs, such as artwork, clothing, or products. Additionally, consider donating to organizations that support Indigenous communities or advocate for Indigenous rights and social justice.

Let's use this Chooseday as an opportunity to come together and honor the rich heritage and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. By choosing to celebrate NAIDOC Week, we can foster greater understanding, respect, and unity.

Thank you for choosing to do good this Chooseday. Giving Solutions, the GoodCompany team.
