Good Morning,
Right now, somewhere in Australia, someone is afraid to go home.
Not because of what's outside.
Because of what's inside.
Family violence doesn't announce itself.
It doesn't wait for a convenient time.
It doesn't take weekends off.
And it is happening right now — in every suburb, every postcode, every community across Australia.
🛑 Here's a number that should stop us in our tracks. 🛑
In the 2024–25 period, more than one woman every week was killed at the hands of a current or former partner in Australia (Unified Lawyers, Australia Domestic Violence Statistics 2025).
1 in 6 women has experienced physical or sexual violence by a partner since the age of 15.
And over 2.3 million Australians reported living through some form of domestic and family violence in just the past year alone (AIHW, 2025).
These aren't just numbers.
They are neighbours.
They are colleagues.
They are people we love — who are suffering in silence, behind closed doors, waiting for someone to reach out a hand.

The hard truth is this: courage doesn't always look like walking out the door.
Sometimes, courage looks like picking up a phone at 2am.
And on the other end of that call?
Safe Steps Family Violence Response Centre is Victoria's only 24/7 statewide family and domestic violence crisis support service.
Operating as a critical entry point for victim-survivors across the state, Safe Steps provides immediate, confidential, and inclusive support to anyone experiencing or afraid of family violence, regardless of gender, age, background, or circumstance.
Each year in May, Safe Steps leads the Candlelight Vigil as part of Family Violence Prevention Month. This important event brings the community together to remember those who have lost their lives to family violence and to stand in solidarity with victim-survivors.
The event this year is held on the 6th of May in East Melbourne, VIC, and we invite individuals and organisations to join us on the night to stand with us, raise awareness, and support our vital work of keeping victim-survivors safe. 🙌

This Chooseday, we're choosing to amplify awareness and showing up for others.
Because the simple act of sharing this email with someone who needs it could be the thing that changes everything.
You don't need to have all the answers.
