Chooseday 2nd June - Choose To Read 📚

Good Morning,

When was the last time you truly switched off… and picked up a book? 📚

Not a Teams message. Not an email. Not a caption. An actual book, magazine, newspaper or long-form article.

For many of us, reading has quietly slipped down the priority list — replaced by notifications, endless scrolling and the feeling that we should always be doing something more “productive”. But what if one of the best things you could do for your wellbeing, sleep and stress levels was also one of the simplest?

If you’ve been meaning to read more, you’re certainly not alone.

New Australian research from Monash University and Australia Reads in 2025 found that more than half of Australians say they read less than they intend to, with busy schedules, screen time and everyday distractions getting in the way. Sound familiar?

📖 Yet the benefits of making time to read are surprisingly powerful.

According to Australia Reads’ latest national research, Australians who read regularly report better wellbeing, improved concentration, lower stress and stronger mental health outcomes — and 43% say reading actually helps them sleep better.

In a world where many workers are feeling increasingly burnt out, overwhelmed or “always on”, reading can become a surprisingly effective circuit breaker.

And the best part? You don’t need to finish a novel every week to feel the difference. Recent literacy and wellbeing research found that reading fiction for just five minutes a day reduced stress levels by almost 20% — proof that even small habits can make a meaningful difference to how we feel.

So this Chooseday, instead of trying to overhaul your routine, why not simply swap one habit for another?

📖 Bring a book to your lunch break instead of automatically reaching for your phone

Start your morning with the paper or a few pages of a book before opening your inbox

🛏️ Read before bed instead of scrolling — your sleep will genuinely improve

🎧 Try an audiobook on the commute and turn travel time into story time

📚 Keep a book in your bag for waiting rooms, flights or those unexpected moments of downtime

Interestingly, Australians aren’t just reading for knowledge or productivity. Behavioural research in 2025 found the top reasons Australians read are to relax, unwind and keep their brains active — exactly the things many of us could use a little more of during a busy work week.

Because sometimes improving your wellbeing doesn’t require a huge lifestyle change. Sometimes it starts with a cup of coffee, ten quiet minutes… and a good story.

Speaking of reading… help create lifelong readers 📚❤️

This week, we’re shining a light on Dymocks Children’s Charities, a national not-for-profit organisation dedicated to improving literacy outcomes for disadvantaged children across Australia.

For 25 years, Dymocks Children’s Charities has been fostering a love of reading and improving access to quality books because they know something powerful: children who read regularly and have access to engaging books achieve better educational outcomes and lead healthier, happier lives.

By supporting Dymocks Children’s Charities, you’re helping create lifelong readers and learners — empowering children with the confidence, literacy and opportunity to thrive.

Because every child deserves the chance to fall in love with reading — and every great story starts with access to a book 💛
