Chooseday 2nd September, Choose to Tease Your Brain!

ree

Good Morning,

Sudoku on the train. Crosswords over coffee. Reading a few pages before bed instead of scrolling. A  game of chess with a friend.

These aren’t just hobbies — they’re little workouts for your brain. Every puzzle, pattern, or plot twist helps strengthen the circuits that keep our minds sharp.

Just like muscles, our brains thrive when challenged with something fresh and unexpected.

It doesn’t have to be complicated. Learn some new dance moves with a loved one. Try tackling riddles with friends. Swap your usual playlist for a podcast on something you’ve never studied before.

Even brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand can give your brain the jolt of novelty it loves. These small choices not only entertain us, they nurture focus, memory, and resilience.

🧩 Mini Trivia Speed (semantic memory) 🧩

Name three animals that start with the letter ‘K’ in 10 seconds. Go!

But while we all experience the occasional “Where did I put my keys?” moment, dementia is so much more than forgetfulness.

💡 Did you know?

  • Dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia, and the leading cause of death for women.

  • Every three seconds, someone in the world develops dementia.

  • Over 433,000 Australians are living with dementia, supported by more than 1.7 million carers.

  • Around 33,000 Australians live with younger onset dementia, diagnosed under 65 — often while raising families or still working.

  • Two-thirds of those living with dementia remain in the community, not in residential care.

Choose to Support Dementia Action Week 15 - 21 September 2025 -Nobody can do it alone.

Dementia doesn’t just impact the person living with the condition and their immediate carers; it also affects friends, family and the wider social network.

People living with dementia often tell us that friends and family drop away, unsure how to interact after a diagnosis. This can lead to isolation, loneliness and can further drive stigma and discrimination. This Dementia Action Week we challenge everyone in the community to reach out and reconnect with someone impacted by dementia, because nobody can do it alone.

Spread the word and find tips and resources for reconnecting here.

Join the collective movement, your small gift can create a big impact.

With your support, Dementia Australia can bring connection, joy and vital support to families like Col and Shirley’s [pictured above], reaching people impacted by dementia when they need it most. Together, we can ensure no family faces dementia alone.

“When we dance, Shirley doesn't have dementia, and I can feel that. It's the look on her face.”

🌟 Thank you for choosing to improve the lives of those impacted by dementia. Nobody can do it alone.

We see you,

The GoodCompany Team
