Chooseday 7th April, Choose to Put Your Health First

Good Morning,

This Chooseday, choose to put your health first.

Today is World Health Day, and it’s a great moment to check in on the small, everyday habits that support our wellbeing... starting with what we fuel our bodies with.

After Easter (and all the chocolate that comes with it 🍫), it’s easy to stay in the habit of reaching for quick sugar hits throughout the workday. And while there’s absolutely room for the occasional treat, building more balanced choices into your day can make a real difference to your energy, focus and overall health.

Simple swaps can go a long way:

  • 🍎 Keep fruit on hand for a natural energy boost

  • 🥜 Swap the snack drawer for nuts or whole foods

  • 💧 Stay hydrated (even mild dehydration impacts focus)

  • 🍫 Enjoy chocolate mindfully, not habitually

And it matters. In Australia:

  • Around 1 in 2 adults live with at least one chronic condition (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2024)

  • Poor diet is a leading contributor to disease burden, linked to conditions like heart disease and type 2 diabetes (AIHW, 2024)

  • Nearly half of Australians will experience a mental health condition in their lifetime (ABS, 2023)

  • Physical inactivity remains a major risk factor, with over 55% of adults not meeting recommended activity guidelines (AIHW, 2024)

World Health Day is about awareness — but also action.

Because the small choices we make each day add up over time.

What does “putting your health first” look like today?

  • 🥗 Choosing a balanced, nourishing meal

  • 🚶‍♀️ Moving your body (even a short walk counts)

  • 🧠 Taking a break to reset and recharge mentally

  • 😴 Prioritising rest and quality sleep

  • 💬 Checking in on yourself, and each other

Health doesn’t have to mean big, overwhelming changes.

It’s about building sustainable habits that support your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing... not just today, but every day.

Good health underpins everything - our independence, our relationships, and our ability to live full lives. Yet for millions of people, illness disrupts daily life in profound ways. Cancer, immune diseases and genetic conditions remain complex and challenging, often with limited treatment options and unpredictable outcomes.

Today, on World Health Day, we pause to reflect on the critical role medical research plays in improving health outcomes - not only for today, but for generations to come.

The Garvan Institute of Medical Research is dedicated to understanding human health and disease at its most fundamental level. Focusing on the three areas of cancer, immunology and genomics, Garvan researchers are uncovering new ways to prevent disease, detect it earlier and develop more effective, targeted treatments.
