Chooseday 20th January, Choose Mental Fitness

Good Morning,

🧠 Choose Mental Fitness!

The start of a new year often brings fresh energy — new goals, new priorities, and full calendars.

But if there’s one habit worth introducing early, it’s this: protecting our mental fitness at work — before stress turns into burnout.

That’s why today’s ChooseDay is about slowing down, even briefly, to build habits that support focus, resilience and long-term wellbeing.

Work plays a big role in our mental health. In Australia:

  • 59% of employees report experiencing mental distress at work, often linked to high workloads and limited breaks (Human Capital Magazine)

  • Around 9% of serious workers’ compensation claims now relate to mental health conditions like stress and anxiety — and this is rising (Safe Work Australia)

  • Mental health–related claims result in significantly longer time off work than physical injuries (Safe Work Australia)

  • About 40% of workers report psychological distress, contributing to tens of millions of lost workdays each year (NSCA Foundation)

The reality?

Always being “on”, skipping breaks, eating lunch at our desks and powering through exhaustion doesn’t lead to better outcomes — it leads to burnout.

Mental fitness isn’t about doing less forever. It’s about recovering well, creating boundaries, and building small habits that help us perform sustainably.

🌿 Your ChooseDay action

Take 10 minutes today to reset your mind — guilt free.

That might mean:

  • Taking a proper lunch break away from your screen

  • Trying a short mindfulness or breathing exercise

  • Going for a walk and leaving your phone behind

  • Sitting quietly and letting your nervous system reset

Research consistently shows that regular breaks, mindfulness and meditation can:

  • Improve concentration and decision-making

  • Reduce stress and emotional fatigue

  • Support better mood, sleep and resilience at work

Ten minutes may feel small — but done regularly, it helps create healthier workdays and stronger teams.
