Chooseday 20th October - Choose to Be Bad at Something

Good Morning,
You don’t have to be good at everything.
In fact, being bad at something might be one of the best things you can do for yourself.
Somewhere between school, work and everyday life, we learn to value getting things right. We want to be capable, competent and confident. So much so that trying something new can feel surprisingly uncomfortable, especially when we’re not immediately good at it.
But the magic of learning happens when we step outside what we already know.
Whether you’re attempting to bake sourdough, learning a new language or picking up a paintbrush for the first time, being a beginner gives you permission to experiment, make mistakes and discover something unexpected.
🧠 Your brain is built to keep learning.
Neuroplasticity is your brain’s ability to adapt and reorganise in response to new experiences. A 2024 review published in Brain Plasticity explored how learning, exercise and enriching experiences can support brain plasticity throughout life.
Research also suggests that mistakes can be valuable learning opportunities when we take the time to reflect on them.
So, instead of seeing mistakes as proof that you’re not good enough, try seeing them as part of the process. You don’t need to master a skill overnight. You just need to give yourself the chance to learn.

✨ Your challenge this Chooseday: Try something you’re genuinely a beginner at!
Download Duolingo and start learning a new language
Teach yourself to play chess
Sign up for a pottery class
Pick up a musical instrument
Follow a YouTube tutorial to learn a skill you’ve always been curious about.
It doesn’t have to be a big commitment or something you’re naturally good at.
Start small, give yourself permission to make mistakes and resist the urge to give up just because you haven’t mastered it straight away. The goal isn’t to be the best in the room; it’s to challenge yourself, enjoy the process and discover what happens when you try something outside your comfort zone.
Who knows?
You might uncover a hidden talent, find a new hobby or simply prove to yourself that you’re capable of more than you think. 💚
