Chooseday 2nd December, Choose to be Cyber Safe 🛡️

ree

Good Morning,

As we head into the summer season — with holidays, online shopping and more time spent on social media — it’s a great moment to pause and choose to be cyber-safe. Cyber threats in Australia continue to rise, and the risks are real.

🔎 Cyber Safety Stats

  • The recent Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) 2024–25 report shows there were over 84,700 cybercrime reports — that’s roughly one report every six minutes. Defence Ministers

  • For small businesses, the average cost per cyber-incident rose to about AUD $56,600 in 2024–25. Defence Ministers

  • According to the latest Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) “Cybercrime in Australia 2024” survey: 47 % of respondents experienced at least one form of cybercrime in the past 12 months — including online abuse, identity theft, malware or scams. Home Affairs Ministers

Because cyber-crime is no longer rare — it’s common — simple precautions can make a big difference.

✅ 3 Easy Ways to Be Cyber-Safe This Summer

  1. Use strong, unique passwords + enable multi-factor authentication (MFA)

Avoid reusing passwords across multiple sites, and whenever a login offers MFA (e.g. a code or push notification), turn it on. This simple step dramatically reduces the risk of account take-overs.

  2. Keep your software and devices up to date

Many cyber-attacks exploit vulnerabilities in outdated software. Regularly updating your operating system, apps and security software closes those loopholes.

  3. Be skeptical of unexpected emails, messages or online ads — especially anything asking for money or personal info

Phishing scams and fake websites remain a key gateway for fraud. If something feels off — a too-good-to-be-true deal, an urgent request for payment, or a link from an unknown sender — pause and verify before you click or respond.
